Stroke Recovery Starts at Home: Raising Awareness Through the Power of In-Home Therapy

May is Stroke Awareness Month, an important time dedicated to raising awareness about one of the leading causes of long-term disability in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 800,000 people suffer a stroke each year—roughly one every 40 seconds. At F.I.T. PT, we are committed to supporting stroke survivors on their road to recovery through personalized In-Home Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy.

What Is a Stroke and Who is Most at Risk?

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either by a blockage (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). A stroke can happen without warning and may lead to lasting challenges with movement, speech, and memory. Early detection and care make all the difference in recovery.

While stroke risk increases with age—most commonly affecting people over the age of 65—strokes are not exclusive to older adults. Recent data show a troubling rise in strokes among younger adults, even those in their 30s and 40s, often linked to lifestyle factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and sedentary habits. African Americans, women, and individuals with heart conditions are also at higher risk. That is why Stroke Awareness Month is so important—it is a chance to learn the signs and take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Recognizing the Warning Signs of a Stroke: Think FAST

The earlier a stroke is recognized and treated, the better the outcome. Know the signs—FASTFace drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911. Awareness also means understanding that recovery does not end at the hospital—it continues through weeks, months, and sometimes years of dedicated therapy.

Life After Stroke: The Role of In-Home Therapy

Recovery does not stop at the hospital; rehabilitation with the right therapy is essential to regain strength, independence, and confidence again. F.I.T. PT’s in-home therapy services provide stroke survivors with the support they need in the comfort and safety of their own homes.

✅ Physical Therapy for Stroke Recovery

Physical Therapy is a big part of stroke recovery, helping patients rebuild strength, improve balance, and move around more safely.  F.I.T. PT in-home sessions make it easier by focusing on what each person needs in their own space. Our therapists help prevent stiffness, improve heart health, and teach everyday techniques that build confidence and support independence—so patients can get back to doing the things they love.

✅ Occupational Therapy After Stroke

Occupational Therapy plays a vital role in stroke recovery, helping people get back to everyday tasks like getting dressed, bathing, and making meals by building fine motor and motor planning skills. Our in-home therapists work one-on-one to assist with in-home modifications to help make individual homes safer and easier to navigate. Occupational Therapists also work on building fine motor skills as well as cognitive skills like memory and problem-solving, teach energy-saving strategies, and offer emotional support to build confidence and adjust to new challenges.

✅ Speech Therapy for Stroke Survivors

Speech Therapy after a stroke helps stroke survivors regain communication skills by improving their speech clarity, language comprehension, and cognitive abilities. At F.I.T PT our Speech-Language Pathologists can also address swallowing and feeding difficulties as well as strengthen vocal muscles. Speech and communication are essential because it is how we connect, express ourselves, and navigate daily life. Being able to communicate clearly affects everything—from asking for help and sharing thoughts to building relationships. After a stroke or illness, losing those abilities can be frustrating and isolating. That is why restoring communication through Speech Therapy is so important. Our Speech Therapists at F.I.T. PT can help you rebuild your communication skills.

My husband was diagnosed of Parkinsons disease 2 years ago, when he was 49. He had a stooped posture, tremors, right arm does not move and also a pulsating feeling in his body. He was placed on Senemet for 8 months and then Sifrol was introduced and replaced the Senemet, during this time span he was also diagnosed with dementia. He started having hallucinations, lost touch with reality. Suspecting it was the medication I took him off the Siferol (with the doctor’s knowledge) and started him on PD-5 natural herbal formula we ordered from AKNNI HERBAL CENTRE, his symptoms totally declined over a 3 weeks use of the AKANNI HERBAL Parkinsons disease natural herbal formula. He is now almost 51…
